Welcome to St.Nick’s on Sunday 6th and 13th July

“Only one thing is needed…” (Luke 10:42)

Dear beloved community,

The summer sun is shining (at least for now—this is Manchester, after all!), and I hope you’re finding moments of rest, joy, and beauty in your days. Whether you’re travelling, gardening, hosting visitors, or just managing to keep the houseplants alive, may you know God’s nearness in the ordinary rhythms of your life.

This Sunday we encounter one of the most beloved—and sometimes misunderstood—stories in the Gospels: Mary and Martha. One is busy and anxious, the other still and attentive. Jesus gently reminds us: “Martha, Martha… you are worried and distracted by many things, but only one thing is needed.”

This isn’t a scolding—it’s a gift. A kind invitation. In the middle of our overstuffed diaries and the ongoing to-do lists, Jesus reminds us that the heart of faith is not found in frantic busyness, but in being present with Him.

Sometimes, like Martha, we need to be reminded to slow down and sit at His feet. And other times, like Mary, we might need the courage to say no to expectations and yes to deeper listening.

As a church, let’s be a place where both hospitality and holiness dwell—where action and contemplation meet. Let’s make space for one another to rest, to listen, and to grow.

This week, take a little time just to be with Jesus. You don’t need to perform. You don’t need to have all the answers. You are already loved.

With joy and peace,

Revd Dr Augustine Tanner-Ihm

Lead Minister, St. Nick’s Kingsway
