The story of Moses as a baby in the basket among the reeds is well known, but another important part of the story is the quiet courage of the women involved.

The king of Egypt, Pharaoh, became afraid because the Israelite slaves were growing in number. To try to control them, he ordered that all Israelite baby boys should be killed at birth. His fear led him to use his power in a cruel and unfair way.

The midwives quietly refused to obey Pharaoh’s order. They knew it was wrong to kill the babies and believed that God would not want them to do this. Their faith gave them the courage to stand up for what was right. When Pharaoh questioned them, they explained that they arrived too late to carry out his command. They bravely resisted a powerful ruler, and God blessed them with families of their own.

Moses’ mother and sister also acted bravely. His mother’s love for her baby, along with her faith in God, gave her the strength to protect him. It took great courage to hide him and then place him in a basket on the river, trusting God to keep him safe. His sister also showed courage when she approached Pharaoh’s daughter after the baby was discovered.

Pharaoh’s daughter helped Moses too. Whether or not she knew about her father’s order, she showed kindness and compassion by rescuing the baby, giving him a name, and making sure he was cared for.

All of these women were strengthened by their faith in God and by their desire to do what was right.

Today, we still see people misusing power. Wars, violence, oppression, religious intolerance, slavery, and the mistreatment of others continue around the world. We also see the effects of environmental damage, including floods, famine, fires, pollution, and the destruction of natural habitats. These problems can make us feel helpless.

However, the women in this story remind us that even small actions can make a difference. Their faith gave them the courage to stand up for what was right. We too can look for opportunities to live out our faith, speak up when needed, and make a positive difference through our actions, our words, and sometimes through quiet acts of courage
