Welcome to St.Nick’s for Sunday 2nd and 9th November 2025
Dear friends,
As we come to the end of October and what a month it’s been I’ve been reflecting on last Sunday’s Gospel reading from Luke 18, where Jesus tells the story of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee boasts about all his good deeds, while the tax collector simply cries out, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” It’s a powerful reminder that the heart of faith isn’t pride, but mercy. God looks kindly on those who come humbly and honestly, not pretending to have it all together, but simply asking for grace.
That same spirit of mercy and welcome is at the heart of our life together here at St. Nick’s Kingsway. This Friday night, we’ll be hosting another Open Mic Night — and it’s shaping up to be a wonderful evening! We’ll be welcoming people who might never normally step inside a church, yet who will find here a warm space filled with music, laughter, poetry, and belonging. Please do come along, bring a friend, or simply pray that those who visit will feel something of God’s mercy and love through our hospitality.
As the nights grow darker and the year begins to turn, may we be a light of mercy in our community — humble, hopeful, and open-hearted.
On 9th November, Remembrance Sunday, we hold a moment that can stir deep and sometimes uncomfortable feelings. For some, it’s a time of pride and gratitude — remembering those who served with courage and sacrifice. For others, it’s a day that brings up pain, loss, or even questions about war, peace, and what patriotism means in a world as complex as ours.
Here at St. Nick’s Kingsway, we are a community of many stories and perspectives. Some among us have served in the armed forces or have family who did; others come from countries where military conflict has caused great suffering. And yet, what unites us is not one view of history, but a shared commitment to honour the memory of those who have died — and to pray for peace in our world today.
Here’s a fact to ponder: since 1914, over 1.7 million members of the British armed forces have lost their lives in service. That number is staggering — a reminder of the human cost of conflict and the deep need for reconciliation among nations.
And here’s an encouragement from the New Testament:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” – Matthew 5:9
This Sunday, whether you stand in silence, whisper a prayer, or simply pause in reflection, may you know the God of peace holding every sorrow, every memory, and every hope for a better world. With peace and blessing,
Revd Dr Augustine Tanner-Ihm
Lead Minister,
St. Nicholas Church
