Welcome to St.Nick’s for Sunday 17th and 24th August 2025
Dear Friends,
In this part of the Bible, Luke 12: 49-56, Jesus speaks with strong emotion. He says,
“I came to bring fire to the earth, and I wish it had already started!”
He’s not talking about burning things down, but about changing hearts and lives. His message is powerful—it shakes things up and challenges people to live differently.
Jesus then talks about a “baptism” he must go through. He’s referring to the suffering and death he knows is coming. He’s feeling troubled, knowing what lies ahead, but he’s determined to complete his mission.
Next, Jesus says something surprising:
“Do you think I came to bring peace? No—I came to bring division.”
He explains that even families will be split because of him. Not because he wants people to fight, but because following him means making hard choices. Some will accept him, and others won’t—and that can cause tension, even between loved ones.
Finally, Jesus tells the crowd they’re good at predicting the weather, but they can’t see what’s happening spiritually. He wants them to wake up and realize that God’s kingdom is arriving, and they need to respond.
So what does this passage mean for us?
This passage isn’t easy to hear. Jesus is saying that following him isn’t always peaceful or simple. It takes bravery and clear thinking. It might even cause conflict. But it’s worth it. So the question is: are we paying attention to what Jesus is doing in the world, or are we too distracted to notice?
With every blessing,
