Welcome to St. Nick’s for Trinity 6,  Sunday 7th July

Dear Friends of St. Nicholas Church, Kingsway,

Blessings to you all on this 6th Sunday after Trinity! It’s Rev Dr. Augustine Tanner-Ihm, OMS, here with a bit of good news and a chuckle to brighten your day.

As we delve into the Gospel of Mark 6:1-13, we find Jesus making a less-than-triumphant return to his hometown. It seems even the Son of God isn’t immune to the adage, “You can’t go home again.” The locals just couldn’t reconcile the carpenter they knew with the miracle worker he had become. Talk about a tough crowd!

But Jesus doesn’t let a little hometown scepticism slow him down. He sends out his disciples two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits and some very specific travel advice: take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts. It’s the biblical equivalent of “pack light and don’t forget your toothbrush.”

Now, speaking of journeys, did you know that on 28 April 1910, French pilot Louis Paulhan landed his biplane in Barcicroft Fields, on the borders of Withington, Burnage, and Didsbury?  If the disciples thought they were travelling light, they never met an early 20th-century aviator!

So as we reflect on this passage, let’s consider the simplicity and trust with which the disciples set out, empowered by Jesus’ authority. And let’s not forget to pack our sense of humour along with our faith—after all, a smile is the one thing that doesn’t add weight to your journey.

Wishing you all a light-hearted and faithful week ahead!

In Christ’s love and laughter,

Rev Dr. Augustine Tanner-Ihm, OMS
