Sunday 25th February (Lent 2)

Dear Friends and Family of St Nicks Kingsway,

Greetings in the grace and peace of our Lord! As we embark upon the season of Lent, a period marked not only by the relinquishing of chocolate (which is, admittedly, a spiritual struggle of biblical proportions for some of us) but also by a deeper, more profound journey of reflection, repentance, and renewal, I find myself contemplating the ashes of Ash Wednesday. These ashes, a symbol of our mortality and a reminder of our need for God’s redemption, speak to us of both the brevity of life and the infinite mercy of God. It’s a season that invites us into a liminal space where heaven seems to touch earth a bit more closely, urging us to live in a manner that reflects this reality.

In this sacred time, I’ve decided to take on a rather literal (and possibly regrettable) interpretation of “going the extra mile” (Matthew 5:41). Starting from Ash Wednesday, I plan to walk an extra mile each day, praying for our parish and the renewal of St Nicks Kingsway. This will be a journey of physical and spiritual exercise, where each step becomes a prayer, each breath a petition for our community’s growth and deepening in faith.

My hope is that this Lenten practice will not only strengthen my calf muscles but also our collective spirit, as we seek to follow Jesus more closely. I invite you to join me in this season, whether by walking, praying, or perhaps by engaging in your own unique act of faith and devotion. Together, let’s explore the depths of God’s love and the breadth of His kingdom, as we journey towards the cross and the glorious resurrection beyond.

May our steps be light, our hearts open, and our snacks healthy (or at least Lent-approved).

Yours in Christ,
 Augustine
